James is currently serving as the Assistant to the Chief Operating Officer for Southern Company. He has 26 years of service and most recently served as general manager of Instrumentation & Controls in Technical & Project Solutions, where he led a team responsible for plant instrumentation and controls design, field support services and cybersecurity strategy for the Southern Company generating fleet.

James is also a senior fellow at Auburn University’s McCrary Institute, joining a prestigious group of other nationally renowned cyber- and critical-infrastructure security experts to develop practical solutions to national security challenges.

James earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Auburn and served our country in the U.S. Marines before joining the system in 1994 as a co-op engineer at Plant Barry. He also holds a degree in avionics technology from Alabama Aviation Technical College.

Over the course of his tenure with Southern Company, James has held various leadership roles of increasing responsibility that include operations team leader at Plant Miller, I&C team leader at Southern Power’s Plant Harris and engineering manager at Plant Watson. He has also served as maintenance manager at Plants Daniel and Barry, and as I&C field support manager within Technical Services.
