Mel is a Senior Designer in Civil Design with a total 37 years of experience in structural steel detailing and design. Mel began his career by learning the structural steel detailing trade where he spent the first 19 years of his career. During this time, he had exposure not only to structural steel but also detailing of heavy industrial fans and ductwork, also serving as a construction project coordinator. In 2004, Mel joined Southern Company as a supplemental designer and hired full-time in 2006. Over the last 18 years he has progressed in his skills, taking on the role as lead structural designer for environmental, new generation, retrofit projects and hydro-modernization efforts, as well as concrete design. For over a decade, Mel has taken a lead role in technology and software support for Civil Design. This role included overseeing configuration, set-up, and training of our 2D/3D Design Software tools. Also serving as the representative on the TSG/DTSG to provide a more consistent design process across the disciplines. He has some time in the field, shadowing the laser scanning process and has served as a Civil Design field representative for a construction project.
