General info/Fun Facts: Fernbank Science Center was built on 4 acres of land on the edge of the 65-acre Fernbank Forest. The land for the center was deeded to the Dekalb County Board of Education from Fernbank. In 1964 the Fernbank Trustees developed a 48-year lease which provided the forest to be used by all citizens of the state, southeast and stipulates that it be protected and maintained by the Board of Education in as near to its natural state as possible. While at the Fernbank Science Center make sure you visit the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium. It is a beautiful experience set in a round theater using the Zeiss Mark V planetarium projector along with the SPITZ SciDome 4K Laser projection system. Did you know that the Jim Cherry Memorial Planetarium is one the largest in the United States? Other attractions you may be interested in are: the Apollo 6 Capsule, Lunar Eclipse Viewing and Live Animals.
