I wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all who have served our county! I come from a military family as my brother served and did two tours in Afghanistan, so I understand the sacrifice that everyone goes through. Thank you for your service as it is because of you that we are able to live the lives that we do.

Want to thank all of my fellow veterans for answering the call to service to keep this wonderful nation safe and free. We are still the beacon of hope for many in the world. Also want to thank the families of our veterans for the sacrifice they endured while we were away.

Words can't describe how honored we are to work alongside so many of our nation's heroes. I have been so fortunate to work with veterans at Gaston Steam Plant, in multiple Hydro Generation facilities, as well as those in my own family. I want to send out a huge thank you to all those who have served, and are serving our great nation. I am very proud to call you all my heroes and friends. God Bless You All.

There were/are many career servicemen in my family. I am extremely thankful for the service of all Veterans and for the sacrifices made by each and every one. I cannot express the gratitude that I have for you and what you did/do for our country; whether you fought or served without being engaged. You were willing to do whatever you were called upon and what was necessary.
On behalf of my entire extended family, thank you.

One of the most powerful and emotional experiences in my 33-year newspaper career came in 2011 when I was privileged to go on the first Mississippi Gulf Coast Honor Flight with 84 World War II veterans. I took my window seat on the jet and soon two old grizzled vets wearing their Honor Flight red t-shirts took the two seats beside me -- Tom Swayze of Diamondhead, Miss., and Bob Hammond of Raymond, Miss. On the flight to Washington D.C. to visit the World War II Memorial and other landmarks, I learned they first met in 1945 in Okinawa and were actually pilots in Marine Fighter Squadron 224, the "Fighting Wildcats." They had flown many missions together in the war and now here they were flying together again -- 66 years later -- and regaling me with gripping war stories of The Greatest Generation. Two scenes on that trip I will never ever forget -- those veterans laying a wreath together and "Taps" being played at the Mississippi monument at the WWII Memorial and those veterans participating in a moving ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Sadly, I don't know where Tom and Bob are today or even if they are still alive, but I think about them often and the sacrifices they made. Here is a link to the story I wrote back then about our journey together: http://blog.gulflive.com/mississippi-press-news/2011/05/honor_flight_has_world_war_ii.html
