My eldest brother Clifford Stephens served in the Vietnam War so I remember some of his stories and the photos he sent home. As a young boy, the photos were more impressionable than the stories...a lasting impression. As a result of my brother shared experience and many other events, I have great admiration and appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our Veterans and their families.

I am a proud daughter, sister, friend and wife of retired servicemen, as well as aunt of a young man who is following in his grandfather's and uncle's footsteps as a Naval Aviator. I have included a picture of my Dad during one of his Change of Commands aboard the USS Lexington in 1977. My entire life has revolved around military influences, including currently living in the very town where my parents met while my Dad went through flight training. My siblings and I grew up with a great respect for all those who serve, but also experienced the feelings that come when you know your loved one is in harm's way and the overwhelming joy of being reunited with them upon their safe return. To all of our Southern Company heroes who have served or continue to serve, thank you...for your love of country, the sacrifice of your families and the freedom you have defended for all of us.

When Veteran's Day rolls around, I always think of Ken Bradley, a Vietnam Veteran and retired Georgia Power corporate communication employee.

The day after The World Trade Center was hit, Ken and I located the largest flag we could find in the US. It was in New Jersey. We wanted to put it on display in Atlanta to show Southern Company's respects to NYC and give them a feeling of national support.

Ken had it shipped from New Jersey and hung it on the side of the Southern Company building (270 Peachtree St.) the NEXT DAY and it was amazing. It faced the interstate connector and could be seen for miles. It draped down an entire side of the 270 Peachtree building and covered windows on eight floors.

When I first saw that flag flying, I turned to Ken and said, "Sir, you are a true patriot!"

Ever since that day -- whenever I see him -- I greet him with, "How's The Patriot?" He was a reluctant warrior in Vietnam which is why he needs our love today.

So to the Ken Bradley's out there, thank you for your service and your love of country.
